What to Expect at Your First Therapy Session

Starting therapy can feel like a big step—exciting, nerve-wracking, or even a little uncertain. At NW Therapy Collective in Eugene, Oregon, we get it. Whether you’ve been in therapy before or this is your first time, knowing what to expect can help ease the pressure and make space for real, meaningful work.

Here’s what your first session might look like—and how we help you feel supported from the start.

💬 1. A Conversation

Your first session is all about getting to know each other. You’ll meet with your therapist in a welcoming space—either in-person at our Eugene office or via telehealth—and have a chance to share what’s bringing you in. There's no pressure to have it all figured out.

We might ask questions like:

  • What’s been going on lately?

  • What would you like to feel different?

  • Have you been in therapy before?

But this isn’t a checklist—it’s a conversation. You’re always in the driver’s seat.

🧭 2. Mapping Out Your Goals

You don’t need to come in with perfect clarity, but it helps to think about what you hope to get out of therapy. Want to manage anxiety? Improve relationships? Feel more grounded? We’ll help you clarify your goals together.

📄 3. Some Light Paperwork (But Not Too Much)

As part of your first session, you’ll review informed consent forms, privacy practices (HIPAA), and a few intake questions. If you’re using insurance, we’ll also make sure we’ve got everything we need to verify your coverage.

💡 4. It's Normal to Feel… A Lot

Starting therapy can bring up nerves, uncertainty, or even hope. Some people leave the first session feeling relief, others feel emotionally stirred up. All of it is normal. The important thing is: you’ve taken a step, and that matters.

Therapy isn’t always easy, but it’s always about showing up—for yourself, your growth, and your life.
